Gen-Z Finds The Semi-biographical Arth, Meaningful

Arth

It has been more than 30-years since Mahesh Bhatt’s Arth hit the theatre screens in the country. The film on extra-marital issues took a view at ladies liberation and the male’s ego from a distinct POV. The movie won one National and three Filmfare Awards for this unconventional relationship.

And yes! Even Gen-Z cannot fail to recognise the layered verses — ‘Tum itna jo muskura rahe ho’, ‘jhuki si nazar,’ ‘Tere khushboo mein basse khat,’ and ‘Koi ye kaise bataye’—written by Kaifi Azmi, Iftikhar Imam and Rehbar.

When everything was on the table for making the film, what went on Bhatt’s mind to bring on the platter such a personal story of his life is still unbelievable!

Arth Ke Peeche Chippi Dastaan

  •  Arth (meaning) is the account of the extra-marital relationship of Inder (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) and Kavita (Smita Patil).
  • Inder is hooked to Pooja (Shabaana Azmi). He leaves Pooja for an intellectually uncertain and unsteady Kavita. However, later, Kavita additionally eliminates him.

  • Pooja chooses to build herself on her own, free from the help of any male.

Arth Ke Kalakaaro Ne Diya Arth Ko Sahi Arth!

  • Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil were appropriately cast to play the spouse and sweetheart. At the same time, their execution was perfect too!
  • Shabana got the longer and more prominent job, and she did full justice to it. She also won the National honour that year.

  • Smita Patil was one of the best things that were going to happen to the Indian film industry! Watch her in the scene where she has an unbalanced perspective, blaming Shabana’s character for intentionally scattering her mangal-sutra that dabs everywhere in the house to hurt her. Another must-watch is the resulting one where she serves her relationship with Inder. Standout!
  • The supporting cast incorporates Raj Kiran as a hopeful vocalist who upholds Shabana Azmi in her snapshots of sadness.
  • Siddharth and Geeta Kak play the family companions. Mazhar Khan showed promising performance in his little job.

 Arth Ke Nirdeshak: Mahesh Bhatt

  • Mahesh Bhatt used to make ordinary motion pictures before Arth (Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain, Lahu Ke Do Rang, Vishwasghaat and so forth).
  • Arth was an achievement in his part of the execution. It was something after which, for him, there was no looking back!
  •  He generally blew the trumpet that Arth was motivated by his own biography (Parveen Babi being the strange other lady in his life). Regardless of the truth or lie of it, Arth is a commendable film.
  • The story has a mind-blowing climax: the movie declares that conceivably the true liberty for a woman is her freedom from the shackles of dependency over men.

  • This was Bhatt’s successful venture, that too came after 12 years!
  • For 2-years the film was not in reels. No distribution was bought.

  • Despite being a successful film Kulbhusan and chart never worked together.
