  1. Buddhism was founded by Siddhartha Gautama(the Buddha) more than 2500 years ago in India with about 470 million followers.

  2. Scholars consider Buddhism is one of the major world religion it practice has historically been most prominent in east and southeast Asia, but its influence is growing in the west.

  3. Story behind the Buddhism-Gautama was born into a wealthy family as a prince in present-day Nepal. Even if he had an easy life, Gautam was moved by suffering in the world.

  4. He decided to give up his luxurious lifestyle and endure poverty. When this didn’t fulfill him, he promoted the idea of the middle way.

  5. This means existence between two extremes, thus he sought of life without social satisfaction but also without poverty.

  6. After six years of searching Buddhists believe Gautama found understanding while meditating under a Bodhi tree. he spent his all life in teaching others about how to achieve the spiritual state.

  7. When Buddha passed away in 483 B.C, his followers began to organize a Buddhism and Buddha teachings became the foundation for what would develop into Buddhism.

  8. In the 3rd century B.C Ashoka the Great, the Mauryan Indian emperor, made Buddhism the state religion of India.

  9. Buddhist monasteries were built and missionary work was encouraged. over the next few years, Buddhism began to spread beyond India.

  10. Today many forms of Buddhism exist around the world, but the three main types are Theravada Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism, and Tibetan Buddhism.
