Danny Denzongpa: Part Of More Than 190 Films Since 1971


Danny Denzongpa was born in a Buddhist family in Sikkim, with his Nepalese accent. If you are a cinephile then here’s all three just know facts about one of the greatest villains of Indian Cinema–Danny Denzongpa

1. His real name is Tshering Phintso Denzongpa. As it was difficult to pronounce, he changed his name to Danny before stepping inside Bollywood recommended by Jaya Bachchan.

2. He completed his education from Birla Vidya Mandir in Nainital and graduation from St Joseph’s College of Darjeeling.

3. He is also a writer, sculptor and painter. He also wished to join the Indian Army someday and win the Best Cadet Award from West Bengal.


4. In one of his interviews, Danny revealed that he qualified for the Armed Forces Medical College but withdrew admission to join the Film & Television Institute of India.

5. He started his career in1970s with Zaroorat. He got his breakthrough in Mere Apne.

6. Later on, he did many movies like 36 Ghante, Chor Machaye Shor, Kaala Sona, Kalicharan, Fakira, Sangram, and Devata. After his performance in Devata, he began doing more significant roles. He was part of big-budget films such as The Burning Train, Paapi, Aashiq Hoon Baharon Ka, and Chunoti.

During an interview in the 1980s, when asked why he decided to direct a film, he explained: “I remember in the 80s, I was so fed up with the films I was doing, those days every villain was a dacoit, and I remember going on the sets where an actor called Tiwari was my partner, and my den was a cave with lanterns. The next day, I went on another set, and I saw Tiwari again as my henchman and the same lanterns. I asked myself what was I doing? I left Mumbai, I did a lot of trekking and did not do films for a couple of years, I told NN Sippy about a script that I had in mind, and he asked me to direct. I made Phir Wohi Raat with Rajesh Khanna, and my girlfriend Kim.”

9. At the beginning of 2003, Danny Denzongpa chose to take a break from films. He craved to do different roles, even if it was a negative character. He appeared only in 10 films between 2003 and 2009.
