Devdas (2002) Proves To Be A Larger Than Life Film!

Devdas

Devdas is a film where Bhansali’s stature as a director who creates larger than life movies is finally inaugurated. The movie once again brings to the table the hefty discussion on what’s more beautiful than dying for love?

Devdas is based on the novel written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The book propelled many filmmakers: P Barua, Bimal Roy and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The 2002 released film is the ninth official remake of the book, bringing to an end the discussion of why Devdas is considered a timeless romantic saga.

A larger than life film is a milestone in Indian cinema even after being criticised as too lengthy and stretched. Nonetheless, the film had to be this long to make you touch the world where Paro, Chandra Mukhi and our own Dev reside!

The Story Of Devdas

  • Devdas Mukherjee (Shah Rukh Khan) and Parvati (Paro, played by Aishwarya Rai) are young lovers and neighbours. They express seriousness for each other. However, their fantasies are short-lived as Paro doesn’t adjust to the family of Devdas.
  • His scheming sister-in-law (Ananya Khare) and mother Kaushalya (Smita Jayakar) freely embarrass Paro’s mom, Sumitra (Kiron Kher). This angered and induced her to wed Paro to the prosperous Zamindar Bhuvan (Vijayendra Ghatge). Paro desires Devdas to take care of the whole situation.
  • All things considered, Devdas composes a letter, leaving Paro to wed Bhuvan. When Devdas wakes up, he sees no point in returning.
  • Devdas suffocates himself in pain and liquor. At that point, he meets Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit). From the start, dismissed by her, Devdas gradually sees her glow and kindness. Be that as it may, his excessive drinking proves deadly to him.

The Characters In Devdas

  • With all its beauty & glory set aside, Devdas’s larger than life appearance wasn’t possible without the still-celebrated performances by its lead actors.
  • Shahrukh Khan as Devdas delivers one of the best performances of his career. He is controlled in most of the portion of the screen. His moment of sadness is convincing and is never over the top as far as the narrative is concerned.
  • Aishwarya Rai in the role of Paro is like poetry in motion. Her depiction of emotions in bringing out devotion, loyalty and tenderness is flawless.
  • The role of Chandramukhi seems to be specially written for Madhuri Dixit. No other actress has played the part of the courtesan with this blatant sincerity!

 The Direction Of Devdas

  • A visionary director with his imaginative film scores the ball out of the park. Devdas has proven to be the work of art & heart.
  • The colours, texture, costumes, sensational choreography and attention to details is what the film delivers, making it breathtaking.
  • The climax of the film is the biggest USP of the film. The way it was shot–imaginative angles, the cuts and everything else–is simply eye-pleasing.

 Did You Know?

  •  The movie was initially offered to Salman Khan. Precisely, in a similar way, the role of Chunnilal was offered to Govinda, Manoj Bajpayee and Saif Ali Khan. They rejected it, explaining that doing a supportive role would hurt their star-power.
  • The film was almost titled “Aaj ka Devdas” due to the issue of copyrights with Chopra. Later, Chopra sold it to Bhansali at a hefty price.
  • In the song, ‘Dola Re Dola Re,’ Aishwarya Rai was bleeding due to the heavy earring she was wearing. She only told about the problem when the shoot was over.
  • Ismail Darbar and Sanjay took around two and half years to compose the music of the film!
