1. Dharam Singh Deol was born on 8 December 1935, later on, named as Dharmendra in the Village of Nasrali, Ludhiana, Punjab. He spent his early childhood days in Sahnewal Village.

2. Dharmendra completed his schooling from Government Senior Secondary School, Lalton Kalan, Ludhiana. His father, Kewal Kishan Singh Deol, was a headmaster there. In 1952, he entered Ramgarhia College, Phagwara to complete his alma mater.

3. He was first married to Parkash Kaur in 1954 at the age of 19. They had 4 kids, 2 sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol and 2 daughters, Vijeeta and Ajeeta.

4. Later, after he married the successful actress, Hema Malini, he became the father of 2 daughters, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol.

5. Interestingly, Dharmendra won the nationally conducted New Talent Award by Filmfare magazine and was promised a movie. Once in Mumbai, the film never came into being.

6. Finally, in 1960, Dharmendra got his first break as a lead hero with Dil Bhi Tera, Hum Bhi Tere by Arjun Hingorani. Soon, next year, he received an opportunity to play as a supporting actor for the movie Boy Friend. During those years, he used to get a salary of merely 50-100 Rs.

7. Although he entered the industry by 1960, it was not until 1966, that finally was raised to success with Phool Aur Patthar. It was during that time that he became friends with Manoj Kumar.

8. Some notable movies of Dharmendra include the hits like Tinku, Rajput and Dharm Aur Qanoon, where he worked alongside Rajesh Khanna. He also worked alongside Jeetendra in movies like Dharamveer. Nonetheless, his most successful pairing as a couple was with Hema Malini. Together, they gave several hits like Sholay, Raja Jani, Seeta Aur Geeta, Chacha Bhatija etc.

9. He played as a protagonist for dozens of successful films, like Dharam Veer, Charas, Azaad and Hukumat. In several movies, he also played negative roles like Shalimar and Sitamgar.

10. Dharmendra has also done several movies in Punjabi like Kankan De Ohle (Special Appearance) in 1970, Do Sher in 1974 and Qurbani Jatt Di in 1990.

11. Later on, once firming his feet in the industry and crafting a foundation, he went on to experiment with Film Production. In 1983, he also established his production company, Vijayta Films. The action film, Ghayal, won 7 Filmfare Awards.

12. Later on, Dharmendra went on to join politics, serving as the Member of Lok Sabha for Bharatiya Janata Party. One of his election campaigns came into focus during 2004. In it, he remarked that he should be elected as a “dictator perpetuo” so he can make everyone learn the “basic etiquette that democracy requires”.

13. He has won hundreds of awards and recognitions including, Padman Bhushan in 2012, National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment (1990), Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (1997), IIFA Lifetime Achievement Award (2007) and many more!
