The Delhi Government has declared a reduction in the legal drink age in the national capital from the current 25 to 21 recently. The administration has said that there would be no new liqueur shops in the area.

But drinking laws in India are many and have been here with us for many years. Know about the many drinking laws in India below:

In India, Liquor Rules

  • The consumption and selling of alcohol do not decrease but can only increase over time. Thus, different drinking laws in India still continue and remain uniform.
  • The issue of alcohol is listed on the list of states in the seventh programme of the Indian Constitution. The rule on the selling and use of liquor thus differs from one country to another.

  • A license for the sale of alcohol is required, and so are consumers in those countries. Alcohol sales are typically allowed in liqueurs, cafes, clubs, discothèques, bars, hotels and restaurants. 
  • Furthermore, houseboats and beaches may dislike the permit to sell alcohol to visitors. Sellers must have an alcohol licence. Without it, it is unlawful and forbidden to deal with alcohol.

  • The age allowable for alcohol intake depends on the region. 
  • And in the Member States, still, alcohol intake and buying age vary.
  • This disparity in alcohol purchase and consumption leads to a misunderstanding that makes the law on alcohol consumption challenging to enforce.

  • The legal age of 1967 for drinking in Karnataka is 21; according to the Karnataka Excise Act, 1965, Section 36, the legal age for buying alcohol is 18 years.
  • Considering the laws of Karnataka, in certain nations, either the drinking age or the buying age is quiet about the act.
  • In this case, it is presumed that the two are the same age for simplicity.

  • Drunkenness is described as the situation of a person who has taken enough alcohol to allow him to lose control over the senses to carry out in the engaged profession during the material period. 
  • The pattern in alcohol consumption is not limited to a particular class of society. It is expected at all levels.
