Grown over 1000-years, Gymnastics is a sport of training the body with rings, bars, and other equipment in a rhythm. It is a blend of flexible exercises and props. It is also done by many to gain strength, agility, coordination, and physical conditioning.

1. ‘Gymnastics’ is derived from the Greek word “gymnos,” meaning “naked.”
2. In Ancient Greece, gymnastics competitions were performed nude.
3. Friedrich Ludwig Jahn of Germany invented several pieces of apparatus, including the parallel bars and the balance beam. He is also known as the ‘Father of Gymnastics.’
4. In 1811, Jahn founded a school to expand gymnastics. Throughout this time, Guts Muth originated more rhythmic gymnastics in Sweden.
5. Anciently, bulls were used as vaults to jump over.
6. Gymnastics was officially authorized as a sport in 1862 and introduced in 1896 in the Olympics.
7. In 1928, the first Olympics competition of gymnastics for women’s gymnasts was held.
8. In the Olympics, only men compete in the Rings, Parallel Bars, Horizontal Bars, and Pommel Horse, while women compete in the Balance Beam and Uneven Bars.
9. Gymnasts use chalk to absorb sweat, improve their grip.
10. In gymnastics, moves are often named after exceptional gymnasts. For example: including the ‘Super E,’ three more gymnastics moves are named after Kelly Garrison.
11. Nadia Comăneci and Nellie Kim were the first ones to receive perfect ten scores in gymnastics at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
12. Aerobic and Display Gymnastics are performed to entertain. An example of this is Cirque de Soleil.
13. Formed In 1881, the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG) became the oldest sports organization.
14. Gymnastics are a large part of the Olympic competitions, held every four years. There are governing organizations for gymnastics in every country, along with a global one as well.
15. Dipa Karmakar created history by qualifying in the individual vault as the first Indian Woman in the Rio Olympics 2016!
