A fantasy novel by Dean Koontz, published in 1988, Lightning is a science fiction thriller. This is an engaging tale that can make you astounded with each next page.

If you are unable to get your copy of it but wish to act smart between your nerdy friends, then you are in the right column. We will be sharing the precise plot and flow of the whole narrative with you.

  1. The novel begins with Dr. Paul Markwell, who is drinking heavily, even though he was on call in County General. He is intoxicated while his mother, Janet Shane, is suffering from labor pain.

  2. Markwell asserts that he’s too drunk to respond, knowing he’s going to make a severe medical mistake sooner or later.

  3. Lightning strikes just feet away from his house as he gets into his car and retreats’, thinking it’s an omen. The lightning accompanied a time traveler, Stefan, from the year 1944, who is part of an experiment in Germany under Hitler.

  4. Stefan is using time travel to predict the outcomes of specific battles and steal technologies from the future.

  5. Stefan prevents the doctor from going to the hospital. He has seen the future of Laura and knows that his mistake of Markwell will put the baby in a wheelchair for life. Doctors handling the delivery ensure that Laura, the baby, is in good health.

  6. Several years pass. A new character, a junkie, intends on raping the now-big, Laura. He robs her and her father in a small grocery store. Stefan gets to know that Laura and her father will be killed so, he appears just as the robbery takes place and kills the junkie.

  7. Another time traveler, Kokoschka, sees both the events and wonders if Stefan has a love interest for the girl. He believes it has something to do with the fact that Stefan has become a traitor. Stefan has fallen in love with Laura.

  8. Laura’s father dies of a heart attack over the coming years. She lives in an orphanage, making friends with twins, Thelma and Ruth Ackerson. It is there that Laura becomes obsessed with a pedophile, Sheener. Stefan beats the guy to a bloody pulp and warns him to leave.

  9. He leaves Laura alone for a while. She is placed with a marvelously loving couple in a foster home, even though the wife, Nina, is in a heart condition.

  10. Sheener attacks Laura at her new home, stabbing her with broken glass. Nina dies from a heart attack. Laura is sent back to the orphanage, where she has lived her childhood.

  11. Laura begins writing as an adult and soon draws the attention of a wonderful man, Danny Packard. They fall in love and get married. They also become financially stable.

  12. They have a son now, Chris, but it was said that Laura cannot have any more kids. Stefan reappears, warning the family of an upcoming accident.

  13. Though Laura thinks they have been rescued by her “guardian angel,” they are rapidly attacked by a gunman from Stefan’s time, who has followed him till now. Danny is killed; Stefan kills the gunman. He agrees to return in a couple of hours, but miscalculates, not able to return for a whole year.

  14. Shortly before leaving Laura after Danny’s death, Stefan tells everything to Laura. Knowing the police won’t believe the truth, Laura covers with a story that Danny was shot by drug dealers who happened to have known her father.

  15. She spends the next year training, learning to protect herself and arming herself. Stefan returns. Laura once defends him and Chris, while Stefan recovers from a gunshot wound.

The story ends with Stefan preparing to return to his own time once he gets healed.

He wants to destroy the time-travel building and halt the Hitler-funded project, which he eventually succeeds at, but almost at the expense of the lives of Laura and Chris.

Later, though Laura says Danny will never be replaced by Stefan, she does develop feelings for him, and the novel ends.
