Part Of Bicycle-Fam, Mountain Bikes Have Close Connection With Adrenaline Rush
Every coin has two sides, and I am interested in…
Mountain bikes carry a certain sense of adventure in their name itself. A lead actor in many Mountain Dew advertisements, this two-wheeler is a dedicated wanderer of the rough and rocky terrains.
Here is a basic ice-breaker for the ones who are unaware of mountain bikes, shedding light on their features and anatomy:
1. Just like Pikachu became Raichu, mountain bikes are viksit-roop of bicycles, mainly designed for off-road cycling, without invading a footpath, of course. They are heavier with more (added) features than standard bicycles to enhance their durability and performance.

2. Equipped with straight and extra-wide handlebars, the mountain bikes generally have a suspension fork, oversized tires, more durable wheels and powerful brakes.

3. With their stronger rims and wide tires, mountain bikes are designed to be used on mountain trails, fire roads and other unpaved surfaces. Basically, all the places where our mothers won’t allow us to ride a bicycle.

4. In the 1970s in Northern California, USA, bicycle riders used modified heavy cruiser bicycles to ride down the mountain trails. In California, these bicycles were called “Ballooners” because of their Balloon Tires. Using this idea, Joe Breeze, a bicycle frame builder, made the first Mountain Bike.

5. By the late 1970s and the early 1980s, bicycle companies started using durable, lightweight materials like M4 Aluminium to make mountain bikes. ‘Lawhill Pro Cruiser’ was the first mountain bike available for sale in 1979. The pricing of the bikes was somewhere around 500$.

6. The angle of the head tube and the angle of the seat tube of a bicycle are the two most crucial angles in bicycle geometry. These angles are measured from the horizontal and impact the bicycle’s performance and the rider’s position.

7. The seat tube angles and head tube angles of a mountain bike are usually 73 degrees and 60-73 degrees, respectively. The angels closer to 90 degrees are generally preferable for sharp handling while pedalling up the hills. The angels closer to 0 degrees are better suited for stability while going downhill at high speed.

8. Riding on rough terrains became more effortless in the early 1990s with the development of mountain bikes having suspension forks. These days many new mountain bikes follow a dual-suspension design that provides a smoother ride by absorbing shocks at both the front and rear wheels.

9. Most of the new mountain bikes offer increased stopping power due to added-on disc brakes. Although located at the wheel’s centre and require less pressure than the rim brakes, disc brakes are comparatively heavier and costlier.

Do you know:
Hero MTB Himalaya is one of the world’s toughest Mountain Biking Races (MTB stage race) in The Himalayas, India? It is funded by Hero Cycles and supported Himachal Tourism.
Although the idea of mountain biking seems like a crazy deal, people around the globe enthusiastically engage in various sports around it, including bike races. Cyclist Adrian Ellul achieved a new feat by riding more than 1000 kilometres in 48 hours on October 11, 2015. The average speed being more than 13 miles per hour.
