Nandi: The Second Avatar of Lord Shiva

Probably every devotee in Hindu Culture might know that Nandi was an avatar of Lord Shiva but do you know the complete story behind this incarnation of Shiva?

1. According to Puranas, Sage Shilada was totally dependent on cows and farming for his livelihood.

2. As Shilada didn’t have any child of his own, he decided to worship Lord Shiva for it.

3. He started worshipping and immersed himself in austerity for thousands of years.

4. Happy from his dedication, Lord Shiva finally appeared in front of Shilada and asked him what he wanted.

5. Shilada demands that he desires to have the Lord in the form of his child.

6. Next day, when Shilada went to the farm to begin ploughing, he found a beautiful baby in the field. The child was shining like the sun.

7. Soon, Shilada heard a voice from the sky, “Shilada, take the child, and raise him up well”. This child was named Nandi.

8. Nandi was an intelligent child and also a fast learner. He was well-versed in scriptures, fighting skills and more.

9. After some years, Shilada met two Rishis. Rishi told Shilada that the death of his son is near.

10. Afraid to hear this, Shilada explains everything to his son, after knowing which Nandi laughed. He tells his father that no one can kill him as his Lord Shiva is with him.

11. Worshipping Shiva earnestly, the pleased Lord appears in front of Nandi, asking him what he wished for. Nandi demands that he desires to be by the side of Lord Shiva always.

And so, Lord Shiva made Nandi the head of all attendants (Ganas), a dear friend and His vehicle.
