Pakeezah Has Even Made Place In The Hearts Of Gen-Z

Pakeezah

Pakeezah is one of those films that took a decade long to be made but has made a place in our hearts for decades to come. It wasn’t a commercial success when it was initially distributed on 4 February 1972–quite acceptable. Pakeezah was not planned for the 1970s crowd that became used to the bubbly emotions of the ’60s.

It was preparing to get persuaded for a high-end masala film and Angry Young Man-based stories. Pakeezah had been in production since the mid-1950s—a more slow, gratified time it must have been.

Story Of Pakeezah

  • This film is about the pure heart (Pakeezah). Nargis (Meena Kumari) is raised by a brothel owner, Nawabjaan (Veena).
  • Incapable of splitting away from the endless loop, Nargis grows up and turns into an excellent and famous artist/vocalist, Sahibjaan.
  • Highborn Salim Ahmed Khan (Raaj Kumar) is excited by Sahibjaan’s magnificence and innocence. In the end, he convinces her to be with him.
  • However, hardships anticipate Sahibjaan as she is recognised by men wherever she goes with Salim.

  • It’s then when Salim renames her “Pakeezah” and takes her to get hitched. She rejects and gets back to the brothel.
  • Salim chooses to wed another person. He welcomes Sahibjaan to come to his wedding. Sahibjaan consents to this, not realising that numerous privileged insights will be uncovered at this wedding.

 Characters Of Pakeezah

  • Meena Kumari’s centre character is undoubtedly one of the best of her career, followed by her roles in Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam and Phool aur Pathar. Every elaboration and subtlety of her demonstration makes some other Bollywood stars pale into insecurity.

  • Her excellent translation of Kathak, combined with her effortlessness in acting, is a charm to watch on the big screen.
  • Rajkummar made a strong influence on-screen even though he had a short part.

The Direction Of Pakeezah

  • A visionary director with his imaginative film scores the ball out of the park.
  • Every specific theme of the film that the director wanted to convey to the audience has been communicated well.
  • The dialogues have been penned down by the director itself, and the scenes proved to be immortal.

Did You Know?

  • The film took 14 years to be completed.
  • During the shooting, two pioneers and great friends of Kamal Amrohi died: Film composer Ghulam Muhammad and Cinematographer Joseph.

  • Due to her illness, Meena Kumari couldn’t dance in some portions of the song. Thus, Padma Khanna was roped in.
  • The iconic station scene was performed by Dharmendra and not Rajkummar. Dharmendra later was thrown out of the film.
