But percussion is like a joint family of instruments that create sound when stricken and beaten by sticks or a beater. The drum is like the bada beta of the family, representing the whole percussion khandan (also creating goodwill in music samaj).
However, drums do not hold all the responsibilities. There are whistles, sirens and blowing conch shells: “haaye, ghar ki ladkiya marking their presence and making the percussion family proud!” But I know your curiosity makes you want to know every single detail of each member! In the classification system, drums belong to the membranophone that usually creates sound when stricken and scraped by drum sticks. Drums have other brothers also named as a cocktail drum, tom-tom drum and many more.
2. Timpani
The sophisticated son of the percussion fam, also known as timps but feels shy when called by its real name that is Kettledrums. This drum has a special love for its partner, known as timpani sticks, as they produce the best sound together, “made for each other Ji!”. It also has its siblings known as machine timpani, pedal timpani and chain timpani.
3. Gong
It is the chacha of the family, mainly used to reside in China, but have a strong connection with the percussion. Gongs are played with the hammers and have a bossed up personality that produces a vibrating sound that can be heard from even a long distance. It is mainly played at traditional festivals and on special occasions.
4. Chimes
It is the chulbuli member of the percussion family, the one who lit up the whole environment with its sweet and chirp voice. Basically, the metal tubes are suspended freely together with some type of weight. When the wind blows, they create the most soothing sound. It is used to make broken chords and chance-based music. She is the “ghar ki laadli beti”.
5. Xylophone
It is the NRI member of the family. With quite a fascinating name, it usually arrives only on special occasions like Christmas. It consists of wooden bars struck by the mallets to create beautiful tunes. Each bar in it is tuned to a pitch of the musical scale. When struck, it makes a different sound, usually high-pitched.
6. Celesta
It is a bell piano kind of little high standard guy in the percussion family of instruments. It has a lookalike brother named piano. The celesta is quite different as it has a smaller cabinet and keys and a large wooden music box. When a hammer strikes a particular set of metal bars and plates, it produces a pleasing sound.
7. Cymbals
Cymbal is that decent chhota bhai of the percussion family that always follows his bada bhai drum. It is round-shaped alloy sheets beaten by drum sticks and creates infinite high pitch sounds, but sounds best when played with the drum. The most common form of cymbal you can see is the one used in the Satsang party, known as the clash cymbal. There are also other types like the bell cymbal, China cymbal, crash cymbal, finger cymbal and many more.
So now you are waaqif of all the frontier members of the percussion instrument family and their uses. “Agar koi sa phupha-tau reh gaya ho toh maafi aur comment mein zaroor bataye…”
