Issues of sexual orientation have long fascinated scientists interested in determining what causes one individual to be heterosexual while another is homosexual? Why do some people feel inclined to girls and other guys, and yet others, to none!

1. In simple terms, sexual orientation means how you are attracted romantically and sexually to other people. There are different kinds of sexual orientations. For example, a person may be:

  • Heterosexual: a person who is attracted only or almost only to the ‘other’ gender. 
  • Homosexual (gay, lesbian, queer): a person usually only attracted to people of a similar or same gender as of the self.
  • Bisexual: a person attracted to both men and women, though not necessarily equally or at the same time.
  • Pansexual (or omnisexual): a person attracted to those of any gender.
  • Asexual: someone not sexually attracted to any gender.

2. Most medical experts believe that sexual orientation involves a complex mix of biology, psychology and environmental factors. It is also said that hormones and genes of an individual also play a role in determining the sexual orientation of someone.

3. Many people discover more about their sexual orientation over time. For example, some girls date boys in high school, then find later on that they are more attracted, romantically and sexually, to members of their gender.

4. Many people first become aware of their orientation during the preteen or teen years. For example, it is common to experience the first romantic feelings in early puberty by having a school crush.

5. Many of those who relate to LGBT+ might feel like they have to pretend to feel things that they do not feel like. That is why they think that they do not fit with their group, family or community. They might feel the need to deny who they are or that they have to hide a significant part of themselves from everyone.

6. But research shows that sexual orientation is likely caused partly by biological factors that start before birth and stable characteristics of a person that cannot be changed.

7. Most medical experts believe that, in general, sexual orientation is not something that a person voluntarily chooses. Instead, sexual orientation is just a natural part of the person.

8. Some gay or lesbian teens tell a few close friends and family members about their sexual orientation. This is often called “coming out”. So, they feel comfortable about being attracted to someone of the same gender.

10. Trying to change someone to a heterosexual orientation, including so-called conversion therapy, does not work and can be damaging. Experts never recommend this. The American Medical Association calls it “clinically and ethically inappropriate.”
