Somnath jyotirlinga is considered to be the first of 12 jyotirlingas.

The Somnath temple is situated in Gujarat near Veraval in (Prabhas Kshetra)
Kathiawad district.

According to Shiv Purana, the moon was married to 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati ayime.

But he loved Rohini the most of his 27 wives, seeing his carelessness towards the other wives.

Prajapati cursed the moon that it would lose all its shining.
A disturbed moon along with Rohini came to Somnath and worshipped the Shiva linga.

After this, the moon was blessed by Shiva to regain his lost beauty and shine.

After this, the moon requested Shiva to settle eternally and the moon also made a temple of Somnath for Lord Shiva.

The meaning of Somnath is the God of the Moon.

The Somnath jyotirlinga has been destroyed and rebuilt many times in history.
