Switch the lights on! Today we’re talking about switchboards, things for current distribution.

We see switchboards everywhere. It is safe to say that there are as many switchboards in the world as there are people. It is only due to them that our modern world can function the way it is supposed to. But how did these switchboards come to be? How did these little buttons which move our world came to be? Curious? Then read on below:

1. Technically, switchboards are devices that direct electricity from the source to a region of usage. It is a device that redirects electricity to wherever it is needed.

3. In simple terms, a switchboard is like a traffic light. It regulates the flow of traffic.

4. Modern switchboards have combined the two sections. Now, any Section can perform the function of both types of Sections.

5. The division of the current supplied is done to provide switching, current protection or further distribution of small amounts of current.

6. A switchboard contains several busbars, strips of copper and aluminium that carry current through the switchboard in large amounts.

7. Initially, busbars were supported by insulators. However, with the advancement of technology, busbars are now manufactured with an insulator covering the whole bar. Only the connection points are left exposed.

8. A switchboard also contains several fuses that protect the operator from electrocution. Modern switchboards come with controls that regulate even the current flow from its supply inside the switchboard.

9. Switchboards are “dead front” constructions. Once the outer coverings and panels are closed, no “energized” parts are accessible. This reduces the risk of accidental electrocutions.

This wonderful creation is the key that has enabled the car of Modernization to move forward!

We are aware of the role electricity has played in our development. But we overlook that it is only because of switchboards that electricity could be used as a resource. *Poof–Mind Blown!*
