Tennis is a strange mixture of intuition, guesswork, footwork, stamina and hair-triggering reflexes. Tennis, a racket sport, is played between the single-player or the double tag team.

- History of Tennis
- History: It can be traced from the 12th century, ‘Jeu de Paume’ (Game of the plan), France.
- Played with the bare hand and a ball. Balls don’t have any kind of bounce in them. Rackets were introduced to the game in the 16th century.
- Tennis is derived from the french word Tenez(Hold).
- Rules of Tennis
- The server must serve the ball to the alternate side of the court from the backline of the court.
- Players get two chances to launch a server to the opponent.
- If a player touches the Net, s/he will automatically lose a point.
- If the ball lands or touches any outside line, it will be considered as IN.
- Professional Games: In every 7-8 game, tennis balls are replaced to maintain speed, control and accuracy.

Tennis Racket
- Modern Tennis Rackets are made in a variety of shapes and lengths.
- Made of light-weighted graphite, titanium, kevlar or fibreglass, giving more flexibility to the racket’s head.
- The perfect weight is 300 Grams.

Tennis Ball
- Made of rubber with air-filled inside the ball. Natural rubber is used in tennis balls to reduce the aerodynamic drag, giving better flight to the ball.
- According to the International Tennis Federation, the perfect diameter of tennis balls is 6.54-6.86cm, and the weight, around 56 to 59 grams.
Net
- A rectangular net with 1.07m height and a post of 3feet.
- It helps to divide the court into two equal parts.
Tennis Shoes
- Helps the player to provide better balance and grip.
- While running on the court, tennis shoes provide better stability than other running shoes.
- Points System
There are either best of 3 or best of 5- sets. Mostly the final match of the tournament is played as a 5-set Match.
- 0 points = Love
- 1 point = 15
- 2 points = 30
- 3 points = 40
- Tied score = All
- 40-40 = Deuce
- Server wins deuce point = Ad-In
- Receiver wins deuce point = Ad-Out
- Types of Tennis courts
- Grass Tennis Court: Also known as Lawn Tennis. Perennial ryegrass plants are used. It takes a lot of maintenance.
- Clay Tennis Court: Made with crushed stone, brick, shale or other unbound mineral aggregate. These are slow courts with a high bounce.
- Hard Tennis Court: Made of rigid material with an acrylic surface layer. Competitions like Australian and US Opens are played on these courts. It is not as fast as Grass nor slow as Clay type tennis courts.

- Court sizes vary in both singles and doubles.
- Singles match: 23.77m long 8.23m wide
- Doubles matches: 23.77m long 10.97m wide
- Important tournaments in India
- Chennai Opens: It was the only ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) presented in India, beginning in Chennai, 1996. Later, in 2017, due to disagreement, the tournament shifted to Pune.
- Delhi Opens: It’s part of the ATP Challenger Tour, started in 2014. It is also known as a Secondary Tennis Circuit.
