The Story Behind Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga

In this section, explore the story behind another Jyotirlinga of Shiva, Trimbakeshwar.
1. Approximately 30kms away from Nasik, located in Maharashtra near the Mountain Brahmagiri is Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga.

2. The Temple of Trimbakeshwar is considered as a source of River Godavari, known as Govadari Ganga.

3. According to Puranas, Sage Gautama used to live in the areas of Brahmagiri mountain.

4. Once there was a miserable drought for 24-years. To rescue people, sage Gautam worshipped Varuna (the God of Rain), and God was pleased. He blessed Gautama with the gift of plenty of rain in the area.

5. But other sages became jealous of him. They sent a cow in Gautama’s granary to destroy it and the Sage as well. When Gautama tried to get rid of the Cow, it was injured and soon died.

6. Seeing these other sages charged a sin of killing a cow on Gautama.

7. Gautama Rishi started to please Lord Shiva as he wanted the Ganges to come to Gautama’s place to purify their area.

8. Lord Shiva, pleased by Gautama, asked Devi Ganga to go to Gautam’s place and purify it.

9. Gautama and Ganga then sang the song for Shiva and requested him to settle here forever.
