1. A bankrupt American metal engineer Charles Goodyear invented the vulcanization of rubber in 1839.

2. The vulcanization process was essential for modern tyres development to sustain high-mileage and high-speed motor cars.

3. In 1845 the first pneumatic (air-filled) tire was developed and patented by Robert Thomson Scotland.

4. The use of air-filled tires was abandoned for 41 years until February 1866, when John Boyd Dunlop completed improved air-filled tires made from rubber.

5. In 1888, Dunlop patented the pneumatic tyre for use on bicycles after a legal battle against Thomson’s successor in title to the patent.

6. The first use of pneumatic tyres on motor cars on motor cars was done by Michelin & Cie of France in 1896. The car was produced by Peugeot and named L’eclair.
