Why was Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga called Vaidyanath?

2. It is one of the highly admired jyotirlinga shrines by Shaivites. The devotees of Shiva believe that by worshipping at this particular shrine, one can be relieved from all of his worries, helping him attain moksha.

3. The story behind this Jyotirlinga is as follows: Once, Ravana worshipped earnestly to please Lord Shiva. He was practising on the Himalaya Mountain. Lord Shiva, impressed by him, appeared in front of him and asked him what he wanted.

4. Ravana asked Shiva to situate himself in Lanka. This could have made him more powerful. A well-known part of this story is when Ravana tries to take the whole Mount Kailash with him, but Lord Shiva keeps his one leg on the ground, crushing the wish of Ravana.

5. As Ravana stays determined, Shiva gives him a Jyotirlinga in the form of a blessing. But, there was a condition that Ravana must carry it to Lanka without placing it on the ground for once. It was because, wherever the Linga would be kept down once, it would fix itself there till eternity.

6. The Gods became worried about this, as each one knew that the placing of Shivalinga in Lanka would make Ravana powerful and soon after, he would misuse it.

7. On the way back to Lanka, Ravana carried the Linga with himself. Varuna (the lord of water) entered Ravana’s belly. Ravana suddenly felt an urge to pee.

8. At that moment, Lord Vishnu stood on the way in the form of a human being, offering Ravana to hold the Shivalinga for some time, to which Ravana agreed.

9. Vishnu then placed Linga on the ground before Ravana came back, and Jyotirlinga settled there forever.

10. After returning, Ravana saw the Linga on the ground. In guilt, he cut his 9 heads in the front of linga, but before removing the tenth one, Lord Shiva comes back and heals Ravana. Shiva places all of his faces back to his body.

11. At that time, Lord Shiva heals Ravana like a Vaid (physician). So, the name of the Jyotirlinga was kept Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga.
