Durvasa means the one who is tough to live with. Know the story behind the Eighth Avatar of Shiva.

1. Durvasa is known as the eighth avatar of Lord Shiva.

2. This incarnation was done by Lord Shiva to preserve the order of the universe.

3. He was the son of the sage Atri and Ansuya and is known for his short temper. Nonetheless, he has always been received with great respect from humans as well as devas.

4. Sage Atri is last among the seven saptarishis and is believed to have originated from the tongue of Lord Brahma.

5. According to Brahmanda Purana, Shiva and Brahma once got into an argument, resulting in the conclusion that Shiva was violent.

6. After seeing this, Devas ran away from His presence in fear. His wife, Parvati, complained that it was impossible now to stay with Shiva.

7. He made a decision that he will deposit his anger into Ansuya after realising the disharmony his anger had caused.

8. After some time the child, Durvasa was born out of anger of Shiva, thus having an aggressive nature.

9. Durvasa has also been part of both Ramayana and Mahabharata.

10. In Azamgarh, a pilgrim place is named after Durvasa. The temple of Durvasa is also located around here. Durvasa took samadhi at this place, according to the priest of this temple.

11. Durvasa also played a role in the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan).
